If you're an SLP treating the school-age populations, you know how hard it is to make a difference in the short time you have with your students.

Sometimes it might feel like your hard earned credentials are going to waste because you're forced to give watered-down therapy, since there just isn't enough time in the day to get to it all.

It might even make you feel like a glorified teaching assistant at times.

To make matters worse, sometimes it's hard to get a straight answer about what SLPs are supposed to be doing to build language and literacy skills.

It's even more frustrating when we have NO TIME to get materials together and plan meaningful activities...

Which usually means we end up throwing something together at the last minute.

When we feel scattered like this, its easy to fall back on activities that are easy to plan, but not likely to get results.

Many of us know our students are falling behind because of their weak vocabulary skills.

And many of us know what we're doing isn't working, but we feel powerless to change it.

We know that one of the things an SLP is "supposed" to be doing is building students' vocabulary, but no one ever really told us how to do it.

If you're like me, you probably have a million questions running through your head. Like:

... How on earth can we make time to dig through all of those curricular materials to find vocabulary words?

... How do we know how many words we can cover each week?

... Is it even possible to get to all the words our students need to know with our limited time?

... How do we figure out if our students truly "know" the words we're teaching them?

... Will we ever be able to make a difference when our students are so far behind?

... How do we focus on teaching the right words that make a difference?

I'm Dr. Karen Dudek-Brannan, and I used to ask myself all of those same same questions. And after years over 10 years of research and trial-and-error in real-life situations, I finally found the answers.

Here's what I finally realized when it came to building my students' vocabulary skills:

We can't teach our students every single word they don't know.

If we want to truly make an impact, we have to narrow our focus...

And focus on teaching our students the HIGHEST PRIORITY words that will make the biggest impact on their overall growth.

Yet the problem is that many of the frameworks out there for vocabulary planning are designed for teachers or reading specialists...not SLPs.

...But if we're going to deliver successful language therapy...we need a vocabulary framework designed just for SLPs.

A system that fits exactly in line with our role and expertise, so we can leverage our time and get the most out of therapy time.

A process that ensures we're focusing on the essentials that actually make a true difference for our students.

A way to bridge the vocabulary gaps...and take students from where they are...to where they need to be.

That's exactly what you'll learn inside

The Vocabulary Foundation

A self-led online course that shows SLPs a system for picking target vocabulary for language therapy.

“I've just finished your course, and I love it! You've simplified it to the essentials.”

What’s inside The Vocabulary Foundation?

The Vocabulary Foundation consists of 3 Modules designed to get you on a path towards building vocabulary skills needed to boost reading comprehension, language processing abilities, written and oral expression, and overall academic performance.

And best of all, I give to simple and straight answers...so you can spend less time searching for words, and more time focusing on your students.

Here's how it breaks down...

Module 01

How we learn words and how to boost vocabulary in kids with language disorders.

Highlights from this module include:

  • How people learn vocabulary, and why having an understanding of this process is the key to effective therapy — and how word learning is different for typically-developing individuals versus those with language disorders (SLI/DLD) and related disabilities.
  • Why we shouldn't be trying to teach our students all the words they don't know, plus the role of implicit vocabulary learning and why students with SLI/DLD can't keep up.
  • How to fill the vocabulary gaps in struggling students — where general education instruction falls short, what the research has shown us about effective instruction, and how to truly help our students boost word knowledge.

Module 02

How to own your SLP role and pick high quality vocabulary targets

Highlights from this module include:

  • How to differentiate your role from the teachers', plus research to back it up so you can communicate your value and defend what you're doing in therapy.
  • How to decide how many words to teach and over what time period — so you can spend enough time on each word, and still move at a pace that will help close the gap.
  • How to pick the highest priority words that give you the biggest bang for your buck, so your students leave the therapy room understanding concepts that will have a true impact on their lives.

Module 03

Understanding and assessing word knowledge

Highlights from this module include:

  • What it means to truly "know" a word, the stages of word learning, and the essential pieces we need in therapy to take students from weak to robust word knowledge.
  • The best formal evaluation tools for vocabulary, and how to pick the right norm-referenced tools to diagnose vocabulary issues.
  • The ultimate guide functional vocabulary assessment, including how take data for progress tracking, and how to dig deeper when formal evaluations don't give you enough information to plan for therapy.

“Dr. Karen takes the stress out of speech therapy by focusing on the underlying skills kids need to succeed. She brings a much-needed element of simplicity to an otherwise very broad area of "language therapy”

~ Rachel S., Speech-Language Pathologist

Questions you might have about The Vocabulary Foundation...

How does this program work?

The Vocabulary Foundation is an 3-hour online course for SLPs who work with school-aged children that are affected by language processing difficulties and disorders.

It's 100% online with self-led video trainings, a materials library with printable therapy tools, and an exclusive Facebook group where you can ask questions.

When you join the program, you get a login to an online members area where you can log in and watch the trainings and download course materials.

You'll have lifetime access to all of the trainings. That means if you get behind, you can always catch up later. You'll also be able to go back and re-watch trainings as many times as you want.

How do I know if this program is right for my caseload?

The Vocabulary Foundation IS for K-12 students who have mild-moderate language disorders, or a history of "language processing" issues.

It IS for kids who are K-12 who are on an academic track (meaning that they will be expected to be learning academic vocabulary and reading/ writing).

The strategies and framework you'll find inside the program can be applied with students identified as having language difficulties due to the following conditions (but not limited to):

Developmental language delay or specific language impairment, central auditory processing disorder, emotional disorders, other health impairments, genetic syndromes or disorders, mild intellectual disorders, autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, dysgraphia, specific learning disabilities, sensory processing disorder. (Not an exhaustive list).

I've tailored this course for SLPs working with school-age populations who might only have 30-40 minutes per week with their students, and who might be struggling to keep their therapy relevant to the curriculum AND their students' needs.

The concepts in this course are most appropriate for students with mild to moderate language impairments who struggle with language in the ACADEMIC settings.

The course won't address techniques for students who are only learning functional communication (like those who need AAC) and are in the severe to profound range.

It also might not be relevant if you only work with very young students (preschool and under). The course is most appropriate for early elementary through early secondary.

What is your refund policy?

When you sign up for The Vocabulary Foundation, you have 60 days to implement the material.

If you aren't satisfied after making an honest effort to use the techniques, I'll just have a form for you to fill out where you can show me the 60-days worth of work you've put in, and I'll give you a full refund. You'll just need to email me at talktome@drkarenspeech.com for support.

This sounds great, but I’m super busy right now. How much time will this take?

The goal of this course is to help you prioritize what you're doing in therapy. So while it might take a couple hours a week for a few weeks up front, the things you'll learn will save you time in the long run.

This is an investment that will keep paying for itself, week after week, with all of the time you’ll save in the long run.

Plus, when you enroll, you have lifetime access to the modules and materials, which means that you can work through the entire program from the comfort of home, at your own pace.

But, if you don’t have that much time each week, it’s OK to go a little slower or take a break. Once you’ve enrolled, the program will always be there for you whenever you’re ready. Each training module is pre-recorded, so it’s easy to jump back in if you fall behind and need to catch up.

Can I earn CEUs for this program?

You will earn professional development hours (PDHs), which are similar to CEUs (formerly CMHs). This is what your professional development hours are called if you earn them from an organization not directly sponsored by ASHA.

ASHA will accept PDHs as professional development hours “non-ASHA” sponsored organizations such as mine, and there is information about the translation from PDHs to CEUs here, as well as what you’d need to do in order to track them. I will provide certificates you can use to document your hours in the case you are ever audited.
State licensing boards vary as far as whether they accept PDHs or CEUs — if you’re not sure, check the requirements for your specific state.

You will earn a total of 3 CMHs for the Vocabulary Foundation coursework.

Will my employer reimburse me for this?

Some of our students have successfully sought reimbursement from their employer, while the majority have paid for the program with their own funds and are now reaping the benefits (you can read some of their stories on this page). Over the past 15 years, I’ve noticed that the most successful SLPs with the highest job satisfaction are often the ones who are willing to invest in themselves and surround themselves with the support they need to succeed.

The people who enroll in this program are committed to their own personal and professional growth — and if that sounds like you, you’re in a great position to see incredible results with this program.

Give The Vocabulary Foundation a 60-day risk-free shot if any of the following sounds like you:

You know you have the potential to make a massive impact on your students' vocabulary skills, but you're overwhelmed with the gap between where they are and where they need to be.

You know that drilling random vocabulary flashcards isn't the right thing to do in therapy, but sometimes you aren't sure what IS the right thing to do. And you just want straight answers about what that is.

You’re sick of spending hours sorting through Pinterest and TpT products of questionable quality, and you just want someone to simplify things for you...so you can spend less time planning and more time living your life.

You’re tired of your supervisors and co-workers not really grasping the value you add...and you find that sometimes you aren't really sure of it yourself. And you want to finally feel confident in your role as an SLP.

One last thing I wanted to share...

Before I figured out how to focus my therapy on the RIGHT skills...I felt like an unappreciated "glorified tutor".

I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to teach my students every word they didn't know...and they weren't making any meaningful progress on any of them.

But when I found out how to focus therapy on the right words...and do it strategically in a way that was unique to my SLP expertise...that's when everything changed.

It's when my students started taking ownership of their learning and making breakthroughs...and it's when my colleagues started looking at me as a trusted expert.

I invite you to make a decision today that will help you do the same.

If you want to walk in to each therapy session confident you're focusing on the vocabulary your students need to thrive in school and life, I invite to you join me in The Vocabulary Foundation.
